PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The top-ranked Rhode Island College wrestling team won seven of the 10 matches Wednesday evening at The Murray Center to defeat New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) rival Plymouth State University, 32-12. The Anchormen raise their dual meet record to 2-0, while the Panthers slip to 0-2.
Sophomore Fred Wilkinson (Quogue, N.Y.) at 125 pounds, freshman Mark Watts (Bedford, N.H./West) at 157 and senior Ryan Schieding (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) at 174 were all credited with majority victories for the Panthers.
Rhode Island College, ranked No. 1 in the latest edition of the New England Wrestling Association Coaches¹ Poll, rode the strength of its lower-weight class to open a commanding advantage, 16-4, earning three consecutive victories between 133 and 149 lbs. Freshman Travis Drappi (West Orange, N.J.) cruised to a 15-4 win at 133 lbs, while senior Mike Bonora (Nutley, N.J.) and freshman Kevin Sutherland (Dauphin, Pa.) recorded pins at 141 and 149 lbs., respectively. Bonora raised his unblemished record to 11-0 with his fourth pin of the campaign, while Sutherland improved to 11-2 with his third win by fall.
Sophomore Mike Martini (Cranston, R.I.) sandwiched a majority decision at 165 lbs. between Plymouth State victories by Watts and Schieding. The Anchormen regained the momentum in the upper weight classes, closing out the match with three consecutive wins. Junior Nick Logan (Lowell, Mass.), senior Kevin Davis (Amston, Conn.), and sophomore Ray Moore (Stoughton, Mass.) sealed the host¹s second straight victory.
Both teams will compete in tournaments this Saturday, Dec. 1, PSU participating in the Ted Reese Invitational at the University of Southern Maine (10:00 a.m.), and the Anchormen in the RIT Invitational in Rochester, N.Y.
