PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Second-seeded Rhode Island College converted a penalty kick in the first half and added two second half goals Saturday afternoon to defeat Plymouth State University, 3-1, in the semifinals of the 2005 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament.
The Anchormen, 11-5-5, advance to play at top-seeded Clark University Sunday in the ECAC championship game, while the Panthers conclude their season with a record of 12-4-4.
RIC got on the board in the 37th minute when junior Holman Giraldo (Pawtucket, R.I.) was fouled and the hosts were awarded a penalty kick. Senior Kyle Teixeira (Warren, R.I.), RIC’s all-time leading scorer, took the penalty kick and scored his 19th goal of the season.
Giraldo tacked on his fourth goal of the season for RIC in the 64th minute, scoring on a bang-bang play when senior Matt Borges (New Bedford, Mass.) found Giraldo at the top of the box and he deposited the pass in back of the net from 25 yards out.
Senior Chris Childs (Cranston, R.I.) notched his third goal of the season, all against the Panthers, in the 80th minute, stealing the ball away from PSU freshman keeper Tyler Shute (Deerfield, N.H.) and shooting it into the open net.
The Panthers avoided the shutout in the 86th minute when senior back Steve Libera (Cromwell, Conn.) tipped a shot by freshman Gareth Stevens (Yeovil, England) shot past RIC sophomore goalkeeper Jadon Neves (Warren, R.I.) for his third goal of the season.
Neves made six saves to record the victory, while Shute made five stops in the defeat. Prior to the start of the 2004 season, RIC was 0-21-2 against Plymouth State. Since then, the Anchormen are 4-0-1 against the Panthers.
