PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rhode Island College overcame an 18-point deficit Saturday afternoon to earn a dramatic 93-80 win over Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference men’s basketball contest.
The Anchormen, who trailed by 18 points in the first half and eight points at the break, chipped away at PSU for most of the second half until finally taking lead with 5:35 remaining in the game. RIC went on a 21-7 tear to close out the contest to pick up the victory.
Both teams are now 11-5 overall and 5-2 in the Little East. The two schools, which split the season series against each other, are also now tied for first place in the conference.
Senior guard Andre Daley (Boston, Mass.) put the Anchormen on his back, making key baskets to keep RIC in striking distance throughout the first half. He totaled 30 points, four rebounds, six steals and two assists in the win. Sophomore forward John Weir (Danbury, Conn.) had a career-high 18 points and 10 boards and junior Kevin Payette (Woonsocket, R.I.) had 16 points, four rebounds and three steals.
The outcome spoiled another terrific offensive performance by PSU senior Nick Pelotte (Bingham, Maine). The speedy guard finished with 38 points, his second-highest output this season, along with nine rebounds and four assists. He made 13-of-23 field goal attempts, including 4-of-8 from three-point range, and 8-of-13 from the line. Only his 40-point effort at Tufts in December surpassed Saturday’s performance.
The Panthers also got 17 points and 12 rebounds from sophomore Andreas Pope (Brooklyn, N.Y.), his eighth double-double of the season. (Three other times he finished one rebound shy of a double-double.) Junior Kevin Boutilier (No. Andover, Mass.) chipped in with 10 points.
Plymouth State, which has played only five of its 16 games at home, returns to Foley Gymnasium for four consecutive home games, beginning Tuesday (Jan. 25) against Southern Maine (7:30 p.m.) RIC will play at Western Connecticut on Tuesday.
