PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In a battle of the only undefeated teams in Little East Conference play and the past two LEC champions, the Rhode Island College women’s tennis team defeated Plymouth State University, 6-3, Saturday afternoon.
The outcome snapped PSU’s six-match winning streak and left the Panthers with a 6-3 overall record and 5-1 conference mark, while RIC improved to 8-1 overall and 6-0 in the LEC. RIC won the LEC Championship in 2003 but PSU edged the Anchorwomen by one-half point for the 2004 title.
Three of the singles matches went to three sets Saturday, with RIC winning all three, and that proved to be the difference.
Senior Sarah Cole (North Waterboro, Maine) was a double-winner for the Panthers, taking the No. 5 singles match in straight sets and teaming with senior Liz Duell (Hope Valley, R.I.) for a 9-7 triumph at No. 3 doubles. Freshman Meghan Rodier (Francestown, N.H./ConVal) also collected a win for PSU, winning in straight sets at No. 6 singles.
Senior Liz Barrette (North Providence, R.I.) and freshman Megan Hall (Smithfield, R.I.) led the Anchorwomen, pairing up to win at No. 1 doubles and winning at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively. Freshman Margaret Funk (Oakdale, Conn.) was also a double winner for RIC.
The Panthers wrap up the regular season this coming week with two matches – Thursday in a non-conference match at Castleton State (4:00 p.m.) and next Saturday, Oct. 8, in the home finale against Western Connecticut (11:00 a.m.). RIC has four remaining matches, beginning Monday against Johnson & Wales (3:30 p.m.)
The annual LEC Championships are slated for Oct. 14-15 at Western Conn.
