PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Derek Dimartino (Amhert, N.H.) rushed for 157 yards and one touchdown Saturday afternoon at Currier Field to lead Saint Anselm College to a 24-0 non-conference football victory over Plymouth State University in the season opener for both schools.
Dimartino carried 24 times, including a 77-yarder for a touchdown midway through the second quarter, to give the Hawks a 14-0 lead at halftime. It was the first career meeting between the two schools.
St. Anselm got on the board with 5:30 left in the opening quarter when sophomore Michael Garcarz (New Britain, Conn.) scored on a five-yard run. Garcarz also finished the game with six catches for 58 yards as well as kicking a field goal.
Leading 14-0, the Hawks threatened again late in the third quarter, but Dimartino was stopped short on fourth-and-goal from the one yard line by PSU’s Adam Briggs (Peabody, Mass.), Dan Fallon (Manchester, N.H.) and Nick Chiligirian (Haverhill, Mass.).
It was still 14-0 with less than six minutes remaining in the contest when St. Anselm recovered a fumble at the Panther 11-yard line, converting it into a Garcarz 22-yard field goal.
Senior Jim Malone (Leominster, Mass.) rounded out the scoring with three minutes remaining when he returned an interception 41 yards for a touchdown.
Sophomore Dan Fortier (Salem, N.H.) had a solid day in the Panther backfield, rushing for 84 yards on 19 carries. Senior Harold Roy (East Boston, Mass.) was the top PSU receiver, catching five passes from sophomore QB Tye Seastedt (Danville, N.H.) for 45 yards.
Saint Anselm junior Brian Sundell (North Easton, Mass.) led the Hawks defense with 12 tackles, including nine solos. Fallon anchored the Panther defense, making eight tackles and grabbing one interception.
PSU looks for its first win of the season next Saturday at UMass Dartmouth (12:00 p.m.), while Saint Anselm visits Assumption for its Northeast-10 Conference opener (1:00 p.m.).
