CASTLETON, Vt. – Junior Lilly Silva (Lowell, Mass.) scored two goals and assisted on another Wednesday afternoon to lead Plymouth State University to a 7-1 victory over Castleton State College in a non-conference field hockey game.
The outcome was PSU’s second straight 7-1 triumph to open the season; the Panthers knocked off Thomas College by the same score in Saturday’s season opener.
PSU led 2-0 at halftime, as senior co-captains Amanda Gutowski (Conway, N.H.) and Annie Metz (Chelmsford, Mass.) notched goals for the visitors. Silva scored twice and sophomore Christina Farias (East Dennis, Mass.) added one to give the Panthers a 5-0 lead with 21:30 left in the second half.
Senior Jessica Benway (Waterbury, Vt.) put Castleton State on the board with 17:35 remaining, but PSU closed out the scoring with goals by freshman Jenna Lace (Pascoag, R.I.) and senior co-captain Caitlin Moran (Rowley, Mass.).
PSU finished with a 26-18 advantage in shots on goal, including 11-4 in the first half. Freshman goalie Katie Randall (Portsmouth, N.H.) was credited with 11 saves, while classmate Leah Curtin (Londonderry, N.H.) made three saves in six minutes of relief.
Plymouth State, 2-0, returns home to host Springfield College Saturday in the home opener at Arold Field (12:30 p.m.). Castleton State, 0-3, is home again Saturday vs. Anna Maria College (1:00 p.m.).
