BOSTON, Mass. – Plymouth State University won nine of the 16 events Saturday afternoon but Simmons College had more depth and edged the Panthers, 149-140, in the final women’s swimming and diving dual meet of the season.
The Panthers complete the dual meets with a 1-7 overall record. Both teams will compete in the New England Swimming and Diving Championships on Feb. 19-21, at Bentley College.
Sophomore Cait Anton (Woolwich, Maine) and freshman Christina DiGiacomo (Meriden, Conn.) led the Panthers against Simmons with three individual victories apiece. Anton posted season-best times in route to capturing the 50-yard backstroke (31.08 seconds), the 200-yard backstroke (2:19.51) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:23.39). DiGiacomo touched first in three freestyle events – the 50-yard (27.89 seconds), the 200-yard (2:10.86) and the 500-yard (season-best 5:53.28). It’s the fourth time in the last five meets that Anton has won three events, and the first time that DiGiacomo has done it.
Freshman Erin Musto (Westford, Mass.) registered a pair of individual victories for the Panthers, finishing first in the 1000-yard free (12:26.21) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:47.48). Sophomore Danielle DeStefano (Centerville, Mass.) captured the three-meter diving for PSU with a score of 174.95.
While PSU had several multiple winners, Simmons had five women capture one individual event apiece, and the Sharks took both relays, including the meet-clinching 400-yard free relay.
