PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Sarah Smith (Lexington, Mass.) scored two goals Wednesday afternoon to lead Plymouth State University to a 3-1 victory over Fitchburg State College in Little East Conference field hockey action at Arold Field.

Smith notched her first goal nine minutes into the game, knocking in a rebound to give the Panthers an early lead. With time winding down on the first-half clock, Smith redirected a pass from senior Melanie Bates (Derry, N.H.) to put PSU up 2-0 at the break. Smith now has three goals on the season.
Sophomore Amanda Sherburne (Rumney, N.H./Plymouth Reg.) came off the bench to extend PSU’s lead to 3-0 early in the second half with her second goal of the season. Fitchburg State broke the shutout bid with 15 minutes remaining, when sophomore Heather DeTerlizzi (Shrewsbury, Mass.) scored off a nice pass from senior Sarah Proctor (Lunenburg, Mass.)
The hosts finished with a 9-4 advantage in shots. Fitchburg State junior goalie Emily Creen (Worcester, Mass.) finished with six saves, while PSU junior Katie Randall (Portsmouth, N.H.) made three stops to register the victory.
