PLYMOUTH, N.H. — Senior forward Jen Webster (Braintree, Mass.) scored a game-high 23 points Tuesday night to pace five players in double figures as second-ranked University of Southern Maine routed Plymouth State University, 105-46, in a Little East Conference women’s basketball game at Foley Gymnasium.
The win was the 20th straight for the Huskies, who remain undefeated in conference play at 13-0 and improved to 23-1 overall. The winning streak is the second longest in school history, surpassed only by a 22-game streak during the 1997-98 season. The Panthers dropped their fourth consecutive game to fall to 10-14 overall and 4-9 in the conference.
The Huskies, ranked second in this week’s D3hoops.com national poll, were red hot all night. They shot a season-high 58.2 percent (39-of-67) from the field, including a blistering 72 percent in the second half (18-of-25). USM was lights out from three-point range, connecting on 12-of-18 from beyond the arc, including all four second-half attempts. The visitors also had a 45-24 advantage on the boards.
Southern Maine scored the first nine points of the game and enjoyed a 25-point margin (29-4) before the game was eight minutes old. It was a 30-point margin the last seven minutes of the half before the teams headed to the locker room with USM up, 61-28. PSU, using only nine players due to injuries, got no closer the rest of the way.
In addition to Webster, sophomore forward Tiffany Jones (Skowhegan, Maine) added 20 points for the Huskies. Freshman Lindsey Welch (Newport, Maine) came off the bench to toss in 12 points, and sophomores Katie Frost (Calais, Maine) and Donna Cowing (Weeks Mills, Maine) each had 10.
Plymouth State had only one player score in double figures, as senior Courtney O’Clair (Stow, Mass.) came off the bench to toss in a season-high 11 points. O’Clair becomes the 10th different Panther this season to lead the team in scoring.
Both teams complete the regular season at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, PSU hosting Western Connecticut and USM entertaining UMass Dartmouth.
