The Plymouth State University Chamber Singers will launch their 2007 performance/study tour of the northeast May 21. The singers will travel through May 27, culminating in a performance at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Along the way the tour will present concerts in New Hampshire, Connecticut, New Jersey, West Virginia and additional locations in Washington, D.C.
A pretour performance is scheduled at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 10 at Plymouth Congregational Church, in downtown Plymouth. Donations at the door will support tour expenses.
The 25-member ensemble will be led by Plymouth State’s Director of Choral Activities Dan Perkins. In addition to his PSU role, Perkins holds positions as music director of the Manchester Choral Society and of the New Hampshire Master Chorale. He is also Principal Guest Conductor of the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet in Hanoi.
Perkins has led the PSU Chamber Singers in highly praised performances in the United States, Canada, South Africa, England and Italy.
The performances will include diverse a cappella choral works by Rossi, Whitacre, Ticheli, Rachmaninov, Palestrina, Lauridsen and others as well as African-American spirituals and songs from South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria.
Dates, sites and times of performances are: Monday, May 21, 7 p.m., Meredith High School; Wednesday, May 23, 7 p.m. at Saint Ann’s Square in Hoboken N.J.; Thursday, May 24, Shepherdstown, West Virginia, 8:30-11:30 a.m., Jefferson High School, 4:20-5 p.m. at Shepherdstown Day Care Center, 8 p.m. at Shepherdstown Train Station, and 8:30 p.m. at O’Hurley’s General Store; Friday, May 25, 3 p.m. the group will perform in the Canon Caucus Room at the Capitol and Saturday, May 26, 7 p.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. The final performance of the tour will be at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Sunday May 27 at 10:30 a.m.
