COLCHESTER, Vt. – Junior Greg Gosier (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) tallied a hat trick to lead the Saint Michael’s College men’s lacrosse team to a 14-9 victory over non-conference rival Plymouth State College Thursday afternoon at Doc Jacobs Field. With the win, the Purple Knights improve to 3-6 overall, while Plymouth State falls to 3-4.
The two teams were tied at 3-3 after the first 15 minutes of action, as senior captain Jim Martocchio (Simsbury, Conn.) led both teams in the scoring column with his two goals for PSC. Gosier then burst onto the scene in the second, scoring all three of his goals within five minutes of each other. Bryan Barletto (Liverpool, N.Y.) was credited with assisting on two of Gosier’s goals, as the Purple Knights took an 8-4 lead into halftime.
Plymouth State’s offense was stifled in the second and third quarters, as the team could only muster two goals in 30 minutes. Saint Michael’s, on the other hand, spread out its scoring run, netting four goals in all but the fourth quarter as the team finished the game with two more goals in the final 15. Kevin Duffy (Yonkers, N.Y.), Jason Vanderstreet (Woodstock, Vt.) and Matt Powers (Taunton, Mass.) each scored twice for Saint Michael’s.
Senior JP Sallese (Beverly, Mass.) and sophomore Ken McGuire (Wayland, Mass.) supplied most of Plymouth’s offense, as both players scored a hat trick. Martocchio finished with two goals and an assist, and sophomore Jason Biedrzycki (Amherst, N.H.) supplied a goal and an assist.
Goaltender Jim Crozier (Cayman Islands, BWI) stopped 11 shots for the Purple Knights, while Jon Clark (Yarmouth, Maine) made 18 saves for PSC.
After all road games this spring because of the snow in Plymouth, PSC finally plays at home on Saturday when it hosts Little East Conference opponent UMass Boston at 1 p.m.
