WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. – Junior Shawn Sullivan (Saugus, Mass.) collected six points Wednesday night, scoring two goals and adding four assists to lead Tufts University past Plymouth State University, 9-3, in non-conference ice hockey action at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
The Jumbos scored three goals in each period to skate away with the victory, improving to 7-13-1 overall, while PSU dropped its fifth in a row to fall to 7-15-0. Tufts led 3-0 after one period and 6-0 after two, but PSU came back with three power play goals in the third period during a major penalty by the visitors.
In addition to the offense provided by Sullivan, senior Pat Byrne (Burlington, Mass.) finished with a goal and two assists for Tufts, and junior John Hurd (Arlington, Mass.), sophomore Jack Thompson (Melrose, Mass.) and freshman Matt Dalton (Duxbury, Mass.) added a goal and an assist apiece. The Jumbos also got one goal each from sophomores Matt McCarthy (Medfield, Mass.) and Ken Cleary (Cambridge, Mass.) and freshman Brian Bailey (East Greenwich, R.I.).
PSU scored all three of its goals in a 60-second span in the third period. Freshman Jay Londer (Philadelphia, Pa.) put the Panthers on the board with his first career goal at 9:00, and junior Michal Bodnar (Olomouc, Czech Rep.) and sophomore Dennis Kane (Westford, Mass.) connected for the Panthers at 9:32 and 10:00.
Senior goaltender Ben Crapser (Paxton, Mass.) made 40 saves for the Jumbos. Sophomore Kyle VanDingstee (Skaneateles, N.Y.) made 27 saves for PSU in the first two periods, and freshman Brendan Fahy (Plymouth, Mass.) came on to stop seven shots in the third period.
PSU has two games left in the season – Saturday at Worcester State (7:00 p.m.) and next Tuesday (2/24) against Western New England at Waterville Valley (6:00 p.m.). Tufts returns home to close out its campaign Friday against Trinity and Saturday vs. Wesleyan, both games at 7:30 p.m.
