PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Two members of the Plymouth State College men’s basketball team have received the top weekly honors by the Little East
Conference for their performances in a pair of Panther games last week.
Senior Tony Martinez (Barnstead, N.H.) was selected as the LEC Player of the Week and freshman Frankie Finklea (Dorchester, Mass.) was named
LEC Rookie of the Week. It is the first Player of the Week honor this season for Martinez, who has been on the conference weekly honor roll four times, while
Finklea earns his first LEC recognition.
The two were instrumental in PSC picking up a pair of LEC victories last week, including an emotional 83-79 triumph over arch-rival and
then-LEC-leading Keene State on Tuesday. The Panthers came back with a tough 89-80 decision Saturday at UMass Boston.
A 6’3” power forward, Martinez averaged 27.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists for the week, while adding three blocked shots and three steals. He
shot 51.2 percent from the field, hitting 22-of-43 shot attempts, while connecting on all eight free throw tries. Martinez was PSC’s leading scorer in both games,
including a 30-point effort in the verdict over Keene State.
A 6’3” small forward, Finklea averaged 12.0 points and 6.5 boards in the 2-0 week for the Panthers. He was good on 52.6 percent of his field goal
attempts, draining 10-of-19 from the floor. He finished with a season-high 19 points in the win at UMB, converting 8-of-14 field goal attempts, while adding seven
rebounds, seven assists and one steal.
The victories extended PSC’s winning streak to three games, improving the Panthers to 12-9 overall and 7-4 in conference play. With three LEC games
remaining in the regular season, PSC has clinched home-court advantage in the first round of the conference tournament, which begins on Tuesday, Feb. 20th.
The Panthers wrap up the regular season with home contests Tuesday (Feb. 13) vs. Southern Maine (7:30 p.m.) and Thursday (Feb. 15) against Rhode
Island College (7:00 p.m.) and a road match-up Saturday (Feb. 17) at LEC-leading UMass Dartmouth (3:00 p.m.)
