PLYMOUTH, N.H. – One of the senior captains on the Plymouth State University men’s basketball team received the top weekly honor from the Little East Conference Monday for his accomplishments in two Panther games last week.
Senior Mike Walcek (Dover, N.H.) was named LEC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week after leading the Panthers in a pair of outings. He is the second Panther this season to earn the weekly honor, joining classmate and former high school teammate Devin Ruocco (Dover, N.H.), who received the award two weeks ago.
A 6’4” forward, Walcek (left) averaged 26.5 points and 8.5 rebounds for the week, including a career-high 31 points in last Saturday’s 92-86 overtime victory over Johnson & Wales. He scored PSU’s first 10 points in the overtime session on a lay-up, five free throws and a three-point basket. Walcek also registered 22 points and nine rebounds in last Tuesday’s 87-77 setback at Tufts, and added eight boards to his 31 points in the win over JWU, scoring 16 points from the free throw line. Walcek scored 28 points on the week from the FT line, converting at an 84.8 percent clip.
An All-LEC Second Team pick a year ago, Walcek is again proving to be one of the top players in the conference. He is second in the league in scoring (16.3 points per game), fourth in rebounding (7.3 per game), sixth in assists (3.6 per game), and seventh in free throw percentage (79.7).
PSU, 6-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play, is idle from competition for two weeks for final exams and a holiday break. The Panthers are back on the court on Tuesday, Jan. 2, when they host Bowdoin College at Foley Gymnasium (6:00 p.m.)
