HARTFORD, Conn. – Lacey Rose (Wellesley, Mass.) scored her first collegiate hat trick Saturday afternoon to lead Trinity College to an 8-0 victory over visiting Plymouth State University in women’s ice hockey action at the Williams Ice Rink. Trinity moves to .500 on the season, evening its record to 4-4, while the Panthers, a first-year varsity program, fall to 1-8 overall and 0-6 in varsity games.
Rose opened the scoring in the first minute of the game when she beat a pair of Plymouth State defensemen and then faked out Panther goalie Lindsay DeLorie (Holliston, Mass.), burying the puck in the right side of the net. Following a goal by teammate Kelley McCarthy (Kingston, Mass.), junior forward Emmy Handy (St. Alban’s, Vt.) scored the first of her two goals of the game with 11 seconds remaining in the first period to give the Bantams a 3-0 lead. Handy also recorded two assists on the day.
Rose scored her second and third goals of the game in the third period to help secure the Bantam victory. Trinity kept Plymouth State without a shot on goal in the first period and finished the game with a decisive shot margin, 54-4. Freshman Hadley Gleason (Boston, Mass.) had a goal and an assist while senior Elizabeth Johnson (Guilford, Conn.) added a pair of helpers for Trinity. Helen McCarthy (Roslindale, Mass.) stopped four shots to earn the shutout in goal. DeLorie hung tough in net for the Panthers, keeping the score tight for most of the game, as she made 46 saves.
PSU now takes a break for final exams and the holidays. The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 10, with a 1:00 p.m. game at Cortland State.
