PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Two Plymouth State University freshmen were recognized by the Little East Conference Monday for their performances in several Panther contests last week.
PSU’s Krista Pettrey (Northfield, Vt.) was selected LEC Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Week, and Shannon Santamaria (Northfield, N.H.) was named LEC Field Hockey Rookie of the Week. It marks the first LEC honor of the season for Santamaria and the second for Pettrey.
A 5’1” forward, Pettrey scored the game-winning goal for PSU with 10 seconds remaining in the second overtime last Saturday to give the Panthers a 1-0 LEC win over Southern Maine. Pettrey’s goal was her team-leading sixth of the season. She is tied for sixth in the conference in scoring with six goals and three assists.
The win over USM allowed PSU to clinch a spot in the LEC Tournament, which begins in two weeks. The Panthers are 8-4-1 overall and in fourth place in the LEC with a 3-2-0 mark heading into Saturday’s match-up at Western Connecticut.
A 5’6” midfielder, Santamaria finished PSU’s 2-0 week with two goals and one assist. She scored both goals Thursday in the Panthers’ 2-0 non-conference win over Endicott, and she assisted on the game-winning overtime goal Saturday in PSU’s 1-0 victory over Eastern Connecticut. Santamaria doubled her season totals to four goals and two assists to rank fourth on the team in scoring.
PSU’s win over Eastern Conn. last Saturday extended its winning streak to six games. The Panthers take an 8-4 overall record and a 6-1 conference mark into Wednesday’s contest against Fitchburg State, the final home game of the regular season.
