PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Two defenders on the Plymouth State University men’s soccer team were recognized for their accomplishments Monday with selections to the 2005 All-New England West Team, as announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Senior back Steve Balgach (Fairfield, Conn.) is a First Team selection on the 2005 NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division III Men’s All-New England West Team, and junior back Bryan Biederman (Holderness, N.H.) is a Second Team pick. Both Panthers were First Team All-Little East Conference performers this past season, and Biederman was voted LEC Defensive Player of the Year.
Balgach and Biederman anchored a Panther defense that allowed only 21 goals in 20 games this past season while recording seven shutouts. PSU allowed more than two goals in a game only twice in 2005.
Balgach(left), a four-year starter, also finished second on the team in scoring the past two seasons, finishing with a goal and four assists as a junior and four goals and three assists in 2005. He started 58 of his 62 career games, ending up with six goals and 10 assists in addition to his stellar defensive play.
Biederman(right), a three-year veteran who hasn’t missed a start in his three years in a Panther uniform, scored his first two career goals this season. He has also been a co-captain the past two seasons and will be one of the top returnees in New England next fall.
PSU concluded the season with a 12-4-4 overall record under coach Rob Wright, finishing third in the Little East Conference with a 4-2-1 mark. After getting eliminated from the LEC Tournament in the semifinals, the Panthers received their eighth post-season berth in the past nine years with an invitational to the ECAC New England Tournament. PSU knocked off Albertus Magnus in the first round, but lost in the semifinals to LEC rival Rhode Island College.
