BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Christopher Hanafin (Burlington, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal with 1:03 left to play in overtime Saturday afternoon to lift the University of Massachusetts Boston past Plymouth State University, 7-6, in a Little East Conference men’s lacrosse match-up at the Clark Athletic Center Field.
The win helped the Beacons even their overall record at 5-5 (1-2 in the LEC), while PSU drops to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
UMB freshman Andrew Rowley (Duxbury, Mass.) sent the game into overtime when he scored an unassisted goal with just four-tenths of a second remaining in regulation.
PSU led 1-0 after 15 minutes as sophomore Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.) scored the only goal of the first period. Gagnon added another goal in the second quarter, but the teams went into the intermission tied at 2-2 as senior Jason Mohre (Sandwich, Mass.) and Hanafin connected for the Beacons.
Gagnon tallied his third goal and sophomore Bobby Dabrieo (Woburn, Mass.) scored his first of the game to give the Panthers a 4-2 advantage midway through the third quarter. After UMB came back again to tie it, senior Eric Gobiel (Chelmsford, Mass.) gave the Panthers a 6-4 lead with consecutive goals, the first one coming late in the third period and the second with 4:20 remaining in the fourth. Hanafin brought the Beacons to within one with 1:04 showing, and Rowley’s goal set up Hanafin’s dramatic overtime game-winner.
Plymouth State returns home for the home opener at Panther Field on Sunday (Apr. 18) against Johnson State College (1:00 p.m.).
