NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – Freshman Bryan Swensen (Chesterfield, Mich.) scored his first collegiate goal at 11:04 of the third period Saturday evening, breaking a 2-2 tie and leading the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to a 4-2 victory over Plymouth State University in an ECAC Northeast Conference ice hockey game at Hetland Arena.
UMD has won four in a row to improve to 5-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the Northeast, while PSU drops to 1-1-0, both overall and in conference play.
It was a tight game the entire way. The hosts took a 1-0 lead at 14:30 of the first period on a goal by senior Shawn Sheehan (Medford, Mass.), only to see the Panthers tie it as sophomore Rory Nickerson (West Chatham, Mass.) notched his second goal of the year, a power play marker at 17:07. PSU went up by a goal three minutes into the second period when sophomore Dennis Kane (Westford, Mass.) tallied his third of the season, but UMD senior Scott Gallagher (Billerica, Mass.) scored a key power play goal with six seconds remaining in the middle frame to make it a 2-2 game heading into the third period.
Plymouth State had a chance to break the tie when UMD was called for too many men on the ice at 8:36 of the third, but the Corsairs killed off the penalty and 30 seconds later Swensen scored what turned out to be the game-winner. Senior Matt Beck (Waltham, Mass.) accounted for the final score with an empty-netter for the Corsairs with 56 seconds remaining.
The Panthers finished with a 34-29 advantage in shots on goal. Senior goalie Michael Mansson (Wilson, Wyo.) stopped 25 shots for the visitors, while senior Ryan Grant (Burlington, Mass.) made 32 saves for UMD.
PSU returns to action next Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 29-30) at the Police Athletic League (PAL) Tournament at Tri-Town Arena in Hooksett, N.H. The Panthers will match up against Saint Anselm College in Saturday’s 6:30 p.m. first-round contest.
