PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Jeff Long (Marlboro, Mass.) scored three goals Saturday afternoon to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men’s lacrosse team to a 7-5 victory over Plymouth State University at Panther Field in the Little East Conference regular season finale for both schools.
The Corsairs complete the campaign in second place in the LEC with a 5-1 mark, 7-5 overall, while PSU finishes in a tie for fourth place in the LEC with a 2-4 record, 5-6 overall. Both teams advance to next week’s annual LEC Tournament.
Sophomores Jeff Boudreau (Newton, Mass.) and Ryan Leary (Framingham, Mass.) and freshmen Ryan Cole (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and Ryan Darmon (Sandwich, Mass.) also scored goals for the Corsairs, while senior Matt Brown (Framingham, Mass.) collected three assists.
Sophomore Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.) led the Panther attack with three goals, while junior Steve Skinner (Hingham, Mass.) and freshman Eric Oliver (Winchester, Mass.) each finished with one goal and one assist.
The Corsairs scored the only two goals of the opening period maintained a two-goal advantage (4-2) at halftime. UMD tallied three unanswered goals in the third period to take a 7-2 lead. PSU came back with the final goal of the third period and the only two goals of the fourth, but neither team was able to score over the final 11 minutes and UMD held on for the win.
Visiting netminder Jason Doyle (Waltham, Mass.) was credited with 10 saves, while PSU freshman Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, Mass.) finished with 19 saves.
Plymouth State will be the fourth seed in next week’s LEC Tourney, and will host fifth-seeded University of Southern Maine Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Panther Field. Third-seeded Keene State College will host sixth-seeded UMass Boston in Tuesday’s other first round game.
Top-seeded and regular season champion Eastern Connecticut and runner-up UMass Dartmouth receive first-round byes. Eastern Conn. will host the LEC semifinals and championship game next Friday and Saturday (Apr. 30-May 1) in Willimantic, Conn.
