WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth scored eight first-period goals Saturday evening and went on to post a 15-5 victory over Plymouth State University in an ECAC Northeast Conference men’s ice hockey game at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
The Corsairs tallied five unanswered goals in the first 14 minutes of play, then added three more before the end of the opening frame to take an 8-2 lead at the first break. PSU never got closer than five goals the rest of the way as UMD improved to 4-0-0 on the season, 2-0-0 in conference play. The Panthers drop to 0-2-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the Northeast.
The game was marred by 52 penalties totaling 155 minutes, PSU getting whistled off 23 times and UMD 29. Both teams scored five power play goals, and the Corsairs tallied three short-handed markers.
Senior Scott Trahan (Chelmsford, Mass.) led all scorers with two goals and five assists for UMD. He scored the first two goals of the game,2 a shorthanded one to open the scoring followed by a power play marker, and tacked on three third-period assists. Junior Mike McPherson (Revere, Mass.) and sophomores Kyle McCullough (Danvers, Mass.), Tyler Vrolyk (Boylston, Mass.) and Chris Grunther (Medford, N.J.) all scored two goals each, and junior Erik Frank (Waltham, Mass.) added a goal and three assists.
Freshman Deni Bojadzic (Gothenburg, Sweden) led Plymouth State with a pair of power play goals, while juniors Matt Withers (Laconia, N.H.) and Nick DeBaggis (Topsfield, Mass.) and freshman Chris Cadieux (Nashua, N.H.) chipped in with one goal each.
PSU returns to action Tuesday evening at Waterville Valley Ice Arena with a non-conference match-up against Castleton State (6:00 p.m.). UMD plays another conference game Tuesday at Worcester State (5:30 p.m.).
