PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Josh Stolp (Hingham, Mass.) scored his sixth goal of the game 2:25 into sudden-death overtime Saturday afternoon, lifting the University of Massachusetts Boston to a 12-11 victory over Plymouth State College in a Little East Conference men’s lacrosse game.
The Beacons overcame a 10-7 deficit late in the fourth quarter to pull out the win. Stolp scored goals with 2:18 and 1:34 remaining in regulation to force overtime, and then added the game-winner in OT. The Beacons up their record to 4-7 overall and 2-2 in conference play, while PSC drops to 3-7 and 1-2.
It was a close game the whole way. The Beacons led 4-3 after one period and surged ahead 6-3 early in the second frame before PSC answered with three straight goals to make it 6-6 at halftime. The Panthers took an 8-7 lead after three quarters and extended it to 10-7 before UMB’s late rally.
In addition to Stolp, UMB got three goals and three assists from freshman Ryan O’Rourke (Milton, Mass.), a goal and an assist from junior Mike Forns (Falmouth, Mass.) and one goal from freshman Steve Cappellini (Hanson, Mass.).
Sophomore John Gallagher (Forestdale, Mass.) led the Panthers with three goals, while senior Jason Biedrzycki (Amherst, N.H.) had two goals and two assists and classmate Ken McGuire (Wayland, Mass.) added two goals and one assist. Junior Sam Harding (South Berwick, Maine) and freshmen Bobby Dabrieo (Woburn, Mass.) and Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.) chipped in with one goal apiece.
UMB freshman goalie Nick Eaton (Rowley, Mass.) made 10 saves to post the win, while PSC freshman Mike Rodrick (Plaistow, N.H.) was solid in net with 16 stops.
Plymouth State is back in action Tuesday (Apr.22) with an LEC make-up game at Salem State (3:30 p.m.). UMB plays again Tuesday in an LEC contest at Southern Maine (4 p.m.).
