NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Junior Jim Ruggeri (Waltham, Mass.) scored eight goals and assisted on two others Saturday to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to a 15-11 Little East Conference men’s lacrosse victory over Plymouth State College in the last conference game for both schools.
The win gives UMD a 7-4 overall record, and solidifies third place in the LEC with a 4-2 mark. PSC drops to 5-6 overall and earns fourth place in the conference at 3-3. Both teams will host an LEC Tournament first-round game on Tuesday (May 1), PSC entertaining fifth-place Salem State and UMD playing host to sixth-place Southern Maine. Regular season champion Eastern Connecticut and runner-up UMass Boston will receive first round byes.
PSC concludes the regular season Sunday (Apr. 29) with a home make-up game against Lasell College at Panther Field (1:00 p.m.).
Saturday’s game was close the entire way. It was tied 3-3 at the end of the first quarter, and UMD led 8-7 at the break. The Corsairs inched ahead in the second half, taking an 11-8 lead after three quarters and outscoring PSC 4-3 in the final stanza.
Senior Mike Beaton and junior Jared Gray added two goals each for the Corsairs, while freshmen Jeff McKee and John Handrahan and junior Dan Salerno each scored once.
Plymouth State got four goals from senior J.P. Sallese (Beverly, Mass.) and two goals and an assist apiece from junior Andrew Quesnel (Middlebury, Vt.) and sophomore Kevin Finnerty (Bay Shore, N.Y.). Senior Jim Martocchio (Simsbury, Conn.) and sophomores Ken McGuire (Wayland, Mass.) and Jason Biedrzycki (Amherst, N.H.) contributed one goal each, with Biedrzycki picking up two assists.
Shots on goal favored the Corsairs, 30-25. PSC junior goaltender Jon Clark (Yarmouth, Maine) made 16 saves, while UMD goalie Jason Doyle made 14 saves.
