TAMPA, Fla. – Union College scored six unanswered goals in the second period Thursday afternoon and went on to post a 10-8 victory over Plymouth State University in non-conference men’s lacrosse action.
The Panthers led 3-2 after the first 15 minutes, but came up empty in the second quarter while the Dutchmen tallied a half dozen goals. PSU regrouped and scored the only three goals of the third frame, but the teams traded goals in the final stanza and Union (1-4) held on for its first win of the season.
Senior Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.) led the PSU scorers with three goals and one assist, while classmate Bobby Dabrieo (Woburn, Mass.) scored twice. Senior Matt Fontenault (North Kingstown, R.I.), sophomore Tony Aguiar (Northboro, Mass.), and freshman Dan Maiorana (Walpole, Mass.) each collected one goal, and freshman defenseman Jordan Ruggeri (Milford, Conn.) picked up his first career assist.
Senior Dan Myerow (Sudbury, Mass.) led the winners with three goals and an assist, while junior Bill Condon (West Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Dana Lashar (Norfolk, Va.) scored two goals apiece. Single goals were tallied by sophomores Tom Simmons (Salisbury, Conn.) and Jonathan Miller (Yarmouth, Maine) and freshman Kevin Rautenstrauch (West Seneca, N.Y.), and senior Bryan Bendjy (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) chipped in with two assists.
PSU junior goalie Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, Mass.) finished with 14 saves, while Union junior Rob Oram (New Canaan, Conn.) earned the win with 17 saves.
Plymouth State, 1-3, returns to New England for the remainder of its schedule, with the next game slated for Tuesday, Mar. 28, at Wheaton College (4:00 p.m.) Union plays again next Wednesday, Mar. 29, at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. (7:00 p.m.)
