The Plymouth State University Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance will present Urinetown, The Musical, April 25-28 at the Silver Center for the Arts.
Dubbed one of the most uproariously funny musicals in recent years, “Urinetown is a hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love and revolution in a time when water is worth its very weight in Gold,” according to the American Conservatory Theatre’s description.
The original production won three Tony Awards, including Best Original Score and Best Spoof of a Musical, with nominations for an additional six.
“This show is such a fun production because the characters lend themselves to a broad range of acting styles,” said Director Beth Cox. “The music parodies a variety of musicals, including West Side Story, Les Miserables, and Fiddler on the Roof. We have had such a great time in rehearsal just creating the world in which these characters live. We cannot wait to have an audience to truly participate in this wild experience of musical theatre.”
In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage caused by a 20-year draught has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public facilities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Enter Bobby Strong, a hero who decides he’s had enough and plans a revolution to lead the people to freedom.
Critic Simon Saltzman wrote in Curtain Up, “That Urinetown is an ideal show for a university production should not be a surprise, as Mark Hollmann’s music and lyrics and Greg Kotis’ book (also lyrics) support the typical theater student’s affection and flair for spoof and satire.”
“This is comedy – often of the laugh-out-loud variety – and it takes pokes at almost everything in its path. … it’s hard to imagine anyone not being infected by its wonderful fun,” Saltzman said.
Performances are Wednesday, April 25 – Friday, April 27 at 8 p.m., Saturday, April 28 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 29 at 4 p.m. Tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for seniors and $10 for youth. Call the Silver Center box office at (603) 535-ARTS or logon to silver.plymouth.edu for tickets.
