The John K. Walsh Scholarship will benefit a current or entering
Plymouth State University student who has shown leadership in his/her school community with regard to the
rights and activities of gay or lesbian individuals.
The scholarship will be awarded in May of 2004, applicable for the following academic year.

The fund was established in June of 2001 by Dr. Billy
Bussell Thompson, Professor Walsh’s life partner and
fellow hispanist. Born and raised in New York City, Dr. Walsh received his undergraduate degree in Spanish
from Notre Dame, a Master’s degree from Columbia University and his Ph.D. from the
University of Virginia. He taught at the University of
Virginia and retired from the University of California at Berkeley after an illustrious career.
