PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The final round of post-season football awards and honors have been announced, and one Plymouth State College player has been named to two All-America teams and seven Panthers were voted to the East Region All-Star Team.
Senior tight end John Walters (Wells, Maine) received the highest honors for PSC, earning Third Team selections on both the Hewlett-Packard and Football Gazette Division III All-American Teams. He was also named a Second Team East Region All-Star by the Football Gazette, as well as First Team All-Northeast by the ECAC. A First Team All-Freedom Football Conference pick and a Division II/III All-Star (as selected by the New England Football Writers) in 2001, Walters led the team with 44 catches, 729 yards and four receiving touchdowns.
Seniors Chad Zibolis (Nashua, N.H.) and Chris Kelliher (Goffstown, N.H.) joined Walters on the All-East Region Second Team. Zibolis, a center who helped an NCAA Division III All-Star team to a victory last Saturday in the Aztec Bowl, was also a Second Team All-ECAC pick and a three-time FFC All-Star. Kelliher, a linebacker who led the FFC in tackles (101) in 2001, was also a First Team All-ECAC choice and a three-time FFC All-Star.
Four other Panthers earned Third Team All-East Region honors from the Football Gazette – sophomore Chad Cleary (South Glastonbury, Conn.) at offensive line, sophomore Shawn McGowan (Londonderry, N.H.) at defensive line, senior Mike Pelletier (Concord, N.H.) at defensive back, and senior Bobby Maylone (Manchester, N.H.) at both defensive back and punter.
The ECAC Northeast All-Stars included Walters, Kelliher and Pelletier on the First Team, and Zibolis, senior running back Russ Massahos (Windham, N.H.) and junior quarterback Matt Simpson (Auburn, Maine) on the Second Team.
The Panthers, 7-3 overall under third-year head coach Chris Rorke, finished as co-champions of the FFC with Western Connecticut, both with 5-1 league records.
