DANBURY, Conn. – Senior Keith Simone (North Salem, N.Y.) scored three goals to lift the Western Connecticut State University men’s soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Plymouth State University on Sunday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.
The Panthers, ranked fourth in New England last Tuesday, suffered their second straight 5-0 defeat, having lost at Tufts by the same score on Wednesday. PSU, now 4-1-0 in the LEC and 8-3-1 overall, had allowed only two goals in winning its first four conference games this season.
All three of Simone’s goals came on set pieces. The first came in the 17th minute off a free kick from 35 yards out. He put the Colonials up 2-0 when Steven Carneiro (Danbury, Conn.) and Elliott Wangaard (Shelton, Conn.) put two quick touches on a free kick from the top of the box 13 minutes before intermission.
Simone, the Colonials leading scorer with nine goals and one assist for 19 points, scored a goal late in the contest following a long pass from Shane Edgley (Oakdale, Conn.) from near midfield. Mike Savenelli (East Haven, Conn.) and Bradley Fidler (Sinking Spring, Pa.) added insurance goals for the Colonials.
WestConn is now 6-5-2 overall and in fourth place in the Little East with a 2-2-1 mark. The top four teams advance to the single-elimination LEC Tournament which begins on Wednesday, Nov. 1.
Daniel Michalowski (Bristol, Conn.) made four saves for WestConn in his third shut out of the season. Sophomore Tyler Shute (Deerfield, N.H.) made seven saves for Plymouth State before yielding to Nick Guisto (West Islip, N.Y.) for the final 10 minutes. Guisto did not have to make a save.
WestConn travels to Wesleyan University on Tuesday, Oct. 17 for a 4 p.m. non-league contest. The Panther host Bates College on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 4:30 p.m.
