DANBURY, Conn. – The Western Connecticut State University’s men’s lacrosse team defeated Plymouth State University, 12-8, Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex for its first-ever win in the Little East Conference.
After taking a 5-4 lead into intermission, WestConn outscored the Panthers 7-4 in the second half to improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. Western finished with a 3-8 overall and 0-6 record in the LEC in its inaugural season in 2004.
The Colonials were led by their top goal scorer Justin Monroe (Norwalk, Conn.) as he scored three goals on the afternoon. Monroe now has 13 goals on the season. Dennis Skarda (Danbury, Conn.) and Jeremy Salley (Norwalk, Conn.) each had two goals and two assists for four points for WestConn. Skarda is WestConn’s point leader with seven goals and 15 assists on the year for 22 points.
Plymouth State, now 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the LEC, was led by junior Jon Gagnon’s (New Bedford, Mass.) four goals and two assists. Freshman Adam Krinsky (Concord, N.H.) added a pair of goals for the Panthers, and junior John Padua (Hamden, Conn.) and freshman John Brule (Northboro, Mass.) each collected a goal.
Scott Fox (New Rochelle, N.Y.) had an outstanding performance in goal for the Colonials, making eight saves while facing 28 shots. Sophomore Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, Mass.) made 15 saves for the Panthers.
The Panthers led 2-1 following Gagnon’s first goal at the 10:34 mark of the first quarter, but WestConn scored three unanswered goals and never looked back. Jeff Keagan’s fourth goal of the season gave the hometowners a 4-2 lead midway through the second quarter.
PSU is scheduled to host Southern Maine in the home opener on Wednesday, but is looking to reschedule the game due to unplayable conditions at Panther Field.
