DANBURY, Conn. – Four of five starters scored in double figures, including Tyshawn Gillespie’s (Hartford, Conn.) team-high 19 points, as the Western Connecticut State University men’s basketball team held on to defeat Plymouth State University 76-71 Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.
Freshmen Jeff Cappa (Waturbury, Conn.) and Carlos Pellot (Carmel, N.Y.) added 17 and 15 points, respectively for the winners. Jamie Procino (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) added 12 points, five rebounds and five assists for the Colonials, now 11-6 overall and 5-2 in the Little East Conference.
The Panthers led by seven points, 39-32 at intermission but could not withstand the Colonials quick start of the second stanza. WestConn scored the first 11 points of the second half, capped off by the first of two-straight dunks by Pellot.
WestConn led the rest of the way but Plymouth State cut its deficit to one point, 69-68 following a short jumper by Walcek with 54 seconds remaining in the game.
Gillespie and Cappa would then hit six straight free throws between them to give the Colonials a comfortable 75-68 advantage with 12 seconds remaining. WestConn earned the season sweep over the Panthers, having won 84-81 in Plymouth last month.
PSU, 8-10 overall and 1-6 in league play, was led by junior Mike Walcek (Dover, N.H.) who canned a game-high 21 points. Classmate Devin Ruocco (Dover, N.H.) added 15 points, four assists and one block for the Panthers.
Both teams host in-state rivals on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. WestConn hosts Eastern Connecticut while Plymouth State returns home to host Keene State.
