PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Vanessa Morton (Wellfleet, Mass.) and sophomores Rachel Webb (West Springfield, Mass.) and Marianne Wilson (Tewksbury, Mass.) won two individual events each Saturday afternoon to lead Westfield State College to a 152-140 victory over Plymouth State University in a women’s swimming and diving meet at the PSU Natatorium.
Westfield State won the first event, the 200-yard medley relay, by two one-hundredths of a second, and went on to capture 10 of the 16 events. The Owls improve to 4-2 in dual meets, while PSU falls to 1-2.
Morton captured the 200-yard freestyle for the Owls in 2:07.86, and took the 500-yard free in 5:43.56. Webb finished first in the 100-yard butterfly (1:06.92) and 200-yard individual medley (2:37.79), and Wilson was the high scorer in both the one-meter (186.45) and three-meter (175.30) diving.
Three other Owls collected one win apiece – sophomore Katie Piquette (Seekonk, Mass.) in the 50-yard breaststroke (36.43), freshman Melissa Blain (Somers, Conn.) in the 100-yard free (59.04), and senior Nicole Spataro (Melrose, Mass.) in the 50-yard fly (31.27). The team of junior Lindsey Bartosz (Chicopee, Mass.), Piquette, Webb and Blain won the 200 medley relay in 2:03.53.
The outcome spoiled a strong performance by PSU sophomore captain Cait Anton (Woolrich, Maine), who won the 50-yard backstroke (31.32 seconds) and 100-yard backstroke (1:05.72). She also swam a leg on the winning 400-yard free relay team.
Other individual winners for the Panthers were sophomore Katie Bouffard (Essex Jct., Vt.) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:18.53), freshman Christina Miller (Manchester, N.H./Central) in the 50-yard free (26.60), and freshman Erin Musto (Westford, Mass.) in the 1,000-yard free (12:41.42). Joining Anton on the winning 400 free relay team was Miller, Bouffard, and freshman Melissa Walczak (Farmington, Conn.).
After a break for final exams and the holidays, PSU hosts the annual Alumni meet on Sunday, Jan. 2. The next official competition is Saturday, Jan. 8, in a dual meet at Bentley (1:00 p.m.). Westfield State is off until Jan. 22, when it hosts Bridgewater State (1:00 p.m.).
