WESTFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore Shanna Litterst (Falmouth, Mass.) scored a second-half goal Friday night to lift Westfield State College past Plymouth State University, 1-0, in a Little East Conference field hockey match-up.
The game was well played and evenly contested. Plymouth State finished with 15 shots, Westfield State had 14 shots, and both teams recorded six penalty corners. Litterst notched the only goal with 10:27 on the clock, striking the shot from straight on several yards inside the circle.
PSU, which had defeated the Owls the last four years, drops to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the LEC, while Westfield State improves to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Senior goalie Kendra Newell (Groveland, Mass.) recorded nine saves for Westfield, including eight in the second half. Panther freshman Katie Randall (Portsmouth, N.H.) finished six saves.
Plymouth State returns home to host Salem State Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. in an LEC contest. The Owls are back in action Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Worcester State.
