NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College men’s lacrosse team outscored Plymouth State University 4-1 in the fourth quarter to force overtime and senior Taylor Jackson (Middlesex, Vt.) tallied 1:17 into the extra session to give the Lyons a thrilling 10-9 victory Tuesday afternoon at Mirrione Stadium.
Playing in its third overtime game of the season, Wheaton remained unbeaten at 2-0-1 while improving its overall record to 2-4-1. The Panthers, who have now suffered three losses by two goals or less, fall to 1-4 on the year.
A four-goal Wheaton run erased a three-goal deficit in the fourth before PSU senior Matt Fontenault (North Kingstown, R.I.) scored with 15.4 seconds left to send the game into the extra session, where Jackson scored his second goal of the contest for the game-winner.
Plymouth State led most of the contest, including a 5-4 advantage at the half. After Wheaton pulled even early in the third frame, the Panthers went on a furious burst, rattling off its three scores over a 1:06 span to make the game 8-5 heading into the final quarter.
Senior Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.) led the Panthers with three goals, including career goal #100. He became the seventh player in Plymouth State history to reach the milestone. Sophomore Adam Krinsky (Concord, N.H.) added two goals and three assists, while Fontenault finished with two goals and senior Bobby Dabrieo (Woburn, Mass.) and freshman Dan Maiorana (Walpole, Mass.) a goal and an assist apiece.
Wheaton sophomore goalie Jeremy Beech (West Newbury, Mass.) made 11 saves in the win, while junior Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, Mass.) made 16 saves for the Panthers.
Plymouth State opens Little East Conference play this Saturday with a 12:00 p.m. contest at Western Connecticut. Wheaton continues its Pilgrim League schedule next Wednesday, April 5 with a home contest against Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at 4:00 p.m.
