PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Keith Whittemore (Holderness, N.H./Plymouth Regional) scored a golden goal in the final minute of the second overtime Wednesday afternoon to give Plymouth State University a 2-1 victory over Gordon College in the men’s soccer season opener at Panther Field.
Whittemore took a pass from senior Alex Marin (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) and sent it to the far corner for the game-winner. Marin had scored the first goal of the game to give the Panthers a first-half lead, but Gordon added a late second-half goal to force the extra sessions.
Marin put the Panthers on the board in the 20th minute finishing off a pass from junior Adam Gove (Kingston, N.H.). PSU had a 5-3 shot advantage in the first half but the score remained 1-0.
The Panthers appeared headed toward victory in regulation, but senior David McMullen (Silver Lake, Ohio) struck a free kick for Gordon, and classmate Nick Hanlon (Ashburnham, Mass.) headed the ball into the goal to tie the game at 1-1 and eventually force overtime.
PSU finished with an 18-16 advantage in shots. Junior Tyler Shute (Deerfield, N.H.) made eight saves to earn the win in the Panther net, while junior Brian Schilling (Goffstown, N.H.) stopped seven shots for the visitors.
Plymouth State hits the road for its next two games, beginning Saturday at Salem State (6:00 p.m.) Gordon opens Commonwealth Coast Conference play Saturday with a visit to Nichols College (11:00 a.m.)
