WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State College field hockey team defeated the visiting Panthers of Plymouth State University, 1-0, Tuesday evening in Little East Conference action at Coughlin Field.
The win over Plymouth State was the first for the Lancers since a 5-4 decision during the 2003 regular season. The victory improves the Lancers to 7-2 (5-1 LEC) on the season, while Plymouth State falls to 4-5 (2-4 LEC).
The lone goal of the game came midway through the second half when senior Jennifer Lyons (Norwood, Mass.) received a pass on a penalty corner and got off a quick pass to her left to a waiting Kara Walker (Templeton, Mass.) who knocked home the game winner with 15:19 remaining in the contest.
Plymouth State outshot the Lancers 10-3 in the first half but goalkeeper Erin MacDonald (Dedham, Mass.) was able to hold them at bay stopping six shots in the half on her way to her third shutout of the season. Junior netminder Leah Curtain (Londonderry, N.H.) made four saves on the night for the Panthers.
Worcester State returns to action on Thursday when it hosts New England College in a non-conference match-up. Plymouth State travel to Salem State on Saturday to take on the Lady Vikings in an LEC contest.
