Plymouth is abuzz with the anticipated arrival of the Yellowjackets Jazz Quartet, at 8 p.m. Saturday, September 8, at the Silver Cultural Arts Center.
The inaugural entree in the 2001-2002 Silver Series of Performing Arts at Plymouth State College, the Grammy Award-winning Yellowjackets have flourished as one of America’s most loved and top-selling jazz groups for more than 20 years. Performing in Plymouth will be Russell Ferrante, keyboards; Jimmy Haslip, bass; Bob Mintzer, reeds; and Marcus Baylor, drums.
The band has demonstrated its mastery of a wide range of musical styles, producing heartfelt balladic numbers and songs inflected with rhythm and blues, bebop or fusion with equal aplomb, according to critics. “The band has continued to push the creative envelope, establishing the mixture of group interplay and improvisation with strong melodic structures that, in a sense, defines their sound and separates the band from its peers.” Readers of Jazztimes voted The Yellowsjackets “best contemporary jazz group of the millennium.”
Ferrante and Haslip are original band members. Hayslip says, “When four people have a great chemistry between them, you don’t need to follow any kind of formula. All of the band’s configurations have what it takes to make something special.” Haslip’s bass is an integral part of the Yellowsjackets sound. In addition to building the foundation upon which their songs are crafted, his thoughtful and often fiery solos are a high-water mark of many yellowjackets tracks
The PSC Faculty Jazz Quintet will open the concert. Faculty performers are Rik Pfenninger, woodwinds; Don Williams, bass; Criag Jaster, keyboards; Paul Bourgelais, guitar; and Tim Gilmore, percussion.
Tickets are $20 – 8.50 at the Silver Cultural Arts Center box office, 535-ARTS. Box office hours are Monday – Friday, noon – 6 p.m. If special arrangements are needed for persons with disabilities, please call in advance.
