NH composer Jonathan Santore earns national recognition

    BACKGROUND NOTES: Jonathan Santore, whose works often feature texts with ties to New Hampshire, is composer-in-residence with the New Hampshire Master Chorale and chairman of the music, theater and dance department at Plymouth State University.

    PLYMOUTH — Jonathan Santore, composer-in-residence for the New Hampshire Master Chorale and chairman of the department of music, theater and dance at Plymouth Stage University, is a recipient of The American Prize in Composition.

    The annual program recognizes top American composers of new works for orchestra, chorus, concert band and chamber ensemble.

    Santore earned honors in the category for professional composers of choral music.

    Santore, whose settings often feature texts with New Hampshire connections, previously received the 2011 Award for Distinguished Scholarship from PSU, where he has taught composition since 1994; a 2010 Individual Artist Fellowship from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, and awards from national and other international composition contests.

    Santore’s compositions have been performed and broadcast nationally and internationally, published by firms including Alliance Music, Walton Music and Yelton Rhodes Music, and recorded by artists on Albany and Centaur Records.

    He has served as New Hampshire Master Chorale’s composer in residence since 2004

    “So much of the work I submitted for consideration for The American Prize 2013 was inspired by and written for Dan Perkins and the New Hampshire Master Chorale,” Santore said.

    “I can’t express how important the excellence and dedication of Dan and the chorale have been to my compositional career …”
