Academic Advising

We advise undeclared and deciding students.

Every PSU student whose major is undeclared upon enrollment is automatically eligible for advising and guidance through the Department of University Studies. Our mission is to assist deciding students, whether or not they have a major, with the resources and personal attention needed to select the most appropriate major and to plot a course of action leading to graduation by the most effective route possible. We also strive to help improve and support the overall advising environment at Plymouth State University.

The Department of University Studies has been active since its pilot year in 2005-2006. Each year, University Studies starts work with a group of new, incoming first year students in spring and summer before orientation, long before their first day of classes in the fall. Dedicated faculty, staff, and members of the University administration devote time to getting to know these deciding students, welcoming them to university life, and serving as academic advisors and mentors until each student chooses a major and moves on to a home department.

Our Philosophy: Prepare, then declare!

A liberal arts education can open up many possibilities for a student’s future, both during and after college. Navigating them can be time-consuming, confusing, and expensive. Will your advisor help you register for courses and meet all of Plymouth State’s general education requirements? Absolutely–but along the way, we’ll challenge you to consider your motivations, explore your interests, and pinpoint the values that will drive you toward a field that is just right for you.

In addition to major and minor exploration, we also offer career services, like specially-trained career advisors, career counseling, and online assessment tools. It’s up to you, however, to drive the exploratory process. Making the commitment to this program means you agree to:

  • Start the advising cycle early—agree to work with your advisor prior to your arrival for summer orientation.
  • Complete self-assessments—online activities that may require 30-45 minutes each to complete.
  • Stay in touch with your advisor—the program is based on building a relationship with your advisor as a resource and mentor, and this means you should be coming in for meetings! You’ll also receive e-mail, mail, or phone calls from us. It’s a commitment of only a few hours per semester, and it is well worth it!

When Do I Meet With My Advisor?

We will be meeting with you during your orientation visit. We’re looking forward to getting to know you!

Once you’ve been through orientation, the pre-semester portion of your University Studies program will begin. These activities will help you and allow us to get to know you. Once the semester has begun, your advisor will reach out to you when it is time to schedule an appointment. Check out our events calendar on this page as well. You are always welcome to stop by the office if you have a quick question- we accept walk-ins!

Feel free to explore our department website and the resources offered, and enjoy the start of your journey! After all, you have the opportunity of a lifetime as an undeclared student—the time to decide what is best for you!
