“Undeclared” Myths: Debunked!

There are many myths and misconceptions about what it means to be “undeclared.” At the Department of University Studies, we aim to teach our students and the campus community that being undeclared is an opportunity, not a disadvantage. Take a look below at some of the common myths and concerns we encounter in our offices, and how we “debunk” and reframe them:

1. Nobody else is undeclared!
2. There is a test that will tell me my perfect major.
3. I'll never pick a major I like. I only know what I DON'T like!
4. Students who start as Undeclared take longer to graduate.
5. If I don’t know I want a certain major when I start, I might not be able to get into it later.
6. I should decide on my major as soon as possible.
7. Choosing a major means I have to give up my other interests.
8. My major will determine my future career.
