PSU Theatre: The Birthday Party
Set in a quaint English seaside town, The Birthday Party is a play about Stanley Webber, a man in his 30s who lives in a low-rent boarding house run by Meg and Petey Boyles. Stanley, who was at one point in his life a piano player, spends his time idly musing about an enigmatic past and randomly interacting with his landlords. Life at the boarding house changes quickly for Stanley when two sinister strangers, Goldberg and McCann, arrive on what is supposedly Stanley’s birthday. The two, who have apparently come looking for Stanley, turn his simple and sweet birthday celebration, which has been organized by Meg, into a frighteningly dark and frenzied nightmare. The Birthday Party, a modern classic that adroitly combines dark ambiguity, unsettling comedy, and high dramatic tension, is one of Pinter’s most produced and disturbing plays.
