The smokestacks of industrial Detroit and their resemblance to the pipes of a giant organ inspired the young American composer Missy Mazzoli’s River Rouge Transformation, which she says reflects the influence of minimalism, 19th Century Romanticism, techno and indie rock. John Williams (of movie soundtrack fame) and our own Velvet Brown team up for Williams’ Tuba Concerto. Tchaikovsky’s beloved Fourth Symphony concludes the program.
