MAPS: A club for You, Through and Through

By: Liam Malik Pelosky, Features Editor

The Marketing Association of Plymouth State or MAPS for short, is a club that likes to be in the action, and if there isn’t any, create some. If you didn’t know this, than you could also be forgiven for not knowing that MAPS & it’s in-house embroidery shop and student club, Statements, using locally sourced materials from North County Quilters & Sew’n Vac, was behind the creation of 2,000 masks this summer for use by Plymouth State Students. However now that this amazing work, done in large part by MAPS President & Statements Director Rob Kendall, & Vice President of MAPS Kyle Hall, has been accomplished. It would be an understatement to say that there is still work left to be done.

To give you, the reader, a better idea of what Statements does when not making masks bythe thousands. I asked MAPS President Rob Kendall how he would best describe the opportunitythat Statements provides, to which he responded, “It essentially [allows you to] run your own business”. Further elaborating that “the students have to go out, find the clienteles, we have to order the product ourselves, make the product deal, with the finances”. Truly as close of an opportunity to run your own business as you will get from a club on campus. Although Rob did make clear that it is up to the members of MAPS to get it done, saying “If it doesn’t get done, that’s on you”. Pretty hard to argue with that!

That is not all MAPS has to offer, however. Compass, an aptly named social media marketing agency run by members of MAPS, gives not only its customers a sense of direction but its workers as well! As MAPS Executive Board member Kuba Kubkowski said, “If you are interested in social media marketing, and if you have been doing it for 1, 2, 3, 4 years here, with MAPS through Compass, you can now put that on your resume as real world experience and then you have actual people who can speak to what you’ve been doing and the real world results to go along with it”. The point being that, whether you are working with Statement or Compass, the opportunity to build your resume and network is always there and always growing!

One last thing I would like to mention. MAPS will be hosting everyone’s favorite winter event at PSU, Rail Jam, this February! Opportunities to get involved in the planning & promotion of Rail Jam are available to all interested students who would like to become members of MAPS! If you are interested in joining, please do not hesitate to contact MAPS President Rob Kendall @ Rjk1017@plymouth.edu.
