  • The topic for the course is selected by the professor from current developments and issues in mathematics education, such as Mathematics for Exceptional Children, Piaget's Research, Mathematics Assessment, and Algebra in the K-12 Curriculum. Course may be repeated on a different topic with permission of the department chair.

    This course is a pedagogical analysis of how and why using history of mathematics as a tool and a goal to improve teaching. A historical light will be shed on what we teach to consider and practice the various ways incorporating history to help teachers meet the Common Core Standards. There are three primary components. First, students will study mathematics from original sources to grasp the context of utilizing historical materials in the classroom. Second, students will analyze and critique educational studies in this field. Third, Students will develop teaching modules with an intended curricular setting at any chosen level, and is written for both mathematics students and instructors. The materials presented in this course are appropriate for elementary, middle, and secondary pre-service and in-service mathematics teachers.
