Plymouth State University’s BS in mathematics major delivers a balanced survey of classical and modern math. Computational courses begin with calculus and culminate in mathematical and statistical modeling. Theoretical courses begin with proof writing and culminate in abstract algebra and real analysis. Collaboration, communication, and perseverance are emphasized throughout the major. Students become trained problem solvers prepared for a large variety of careers.

The BS in mathematical data sciences is an interdisciplinary program that emphasizes computer science, experimentation, and data collection. Mathematics provides students with methods and theory that live at the heart of problem solving and data analysis in the physical sciences, engineering, and innovative industries. Students in this major can combine their mathematical studies with options in other programs that take advantage of the University’s programmatic depth, including biology, chemistry, criminal justice, physical meteorology, psychology, and weather analysis.

Math students also have opportunities to gain research experience through the University’s Statistical Consulting Center, and future mathematics educators have student teaching and professional development opportunities via the Holmes Center for School Partnerships and Educator Preparation.
