What Makes Tame Impala Great

Tame Impala is one of those artists who make you feel like you’re in another world when listening to his music. His blends of psychedelic rock from the 60s and 70s and pop make his music seem foreign. Tame Impala’s tracks bring a new light to the world of music through groovy melodies, inspiring lyrics, and a uniqueness never seen before in the music industry.

Kevin Parker’s earlier career started in his teen years with his friend Dominic Simper, who continues to develop music for Tame Impala today. They both fell in love with the funkiness of psychedelic rock. Eventually Parker started his first band with Domonic Simper and Luke Epstein called the Dee Dee Dums.

Tame Impala develops most of his music in his home studio. During his earlier career he actually made most of his songs right in his home in Australia. Tame Impala got popular when he posted some of his music on his MySpace, eventually grabbing the eyes of an independent labeler Modular Recordings in July of 2008.

During an interview with Rick Rubin via zoom call Tame Impala described to him what he called a “very candid” voice memo that he had recorded. Parker explained that music usually comes to him whenever he’s not trying to make it. During the interview he said: “In fact, if I consciously decide that I want to write a song, you can pretty much guarantee it’ll be the shittest song I’ve ever written.”

Most of Kevin Parker’s pieces come from outside the studio. He explained that he’s been trying hard to isolate what makes him think of 10 songs in three days sometimes, and then nothing for five months. Parker’s ability to create his best music by accident is what separates the gap between regular musicians and Tame Impala.

Some artists make music that sounds familiar, and other artists make music that sounds like you’re stepping into another world. Tame Impala does just that by blending the psychedelic rock influences of the 1960s and 1970s with modern pop and electronic production. Kevin Parker has developed a sound that is ethereal, rhythmic, and distinctly his own. But what makes Tame Impala stand out isn’t just the music itself. It’s also the unusual creative process behind it.
