Come explore the many ways people in the past had fun in and around Plymouth, NH, the “bridge” between the Lakes Region and the White Mountains. Plymouth Historical Society will present a panel discussion, welcoming contributions from the audience, on recreation and relaxation in these areas starting around 1920 through the 1970s.  Join us on Wednesday, July 23, at 5:30 pm in the Old Webster Courthouse to hear stories and see slides from an earlier era of recreation, entertainment, and tourism.

How did recreation change from the era of trains through the building of Route 93? What used to happen every weekend in the gym of the old Speare Elementary School? Why did Babe Ruth come to Squam? What were the thirteen ski areas close by? When did Cannon Mt. get the Tramway?  Why did kids especially like the manager of the old Plymouth Theater?  What cabins and motels used to line Rte. 3 and Rte. 25? What were the most popular “summer jobs?”  These and other questions will be explored by a panel of PHS members and open to members of the audience.

The program is presented in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution and the Museum of the White Mountains Crossroads exhibits, held in the Museum of the White Mountains and co-sponsored by Plymouth Historical Society and Pease Public Library. Funding for the exhibit was made possible by the National Endowment for the Humanities through New Hampshire Humanities.

The program is free and open to the public. Please join us on July 23 at 5:30pm at the Plymouth Historical Society and Memory House in the Old Webster Courthouse, tucked behind Town Hall on Court Street in Plymouth, NH.
