BIOGRAPHY
Tom recently joined the Counseling Center as a doctoral practicum (internship) student and is in his 5th year at Rivier University’s Counseling and School Psychology (Psy.D.) program located in Nashua, New Hampshire. Tom has experience with individual and group therapies, neuropsychological assessment, crisis interventions, and social work. He was previously the president of the New Hampshire Psychological Association’s Student Organization (NHPASO) and is passionate about organizing and advocacy.
COUNSELING APPROACH AND AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION
Tom strives to create a safe and affirming space for students to express themselves. The interventions he uses are supported by the most recent research and are individually customized. Tom primarily uses Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), which focuses on developing a set of skills to alter one’s relationship to difficult thoughts and distressing emotions. Within his work, he holds a genuine, empathic, and authentic belief in each person. Tom believes everyone has the ability to improve their lives when they have the right skills to do so. His style in therapy is always grounded in being understanding while fostering compassion. He prides himself on being challenging when it’s helpful and sharing a laugh whenever possible.
INTERESTS
Tom loves to travel any chance he can, near or far. His favorite things to do are attending concerts and spending quality time outdoors (especially the beach!).
