Requirements for Graduation

Student Recitals

Music majors are required to perform at one Student Recital each semester. Majors at the 1000 level may be exempt from performing in their first semester. Junior and Senior Recital performances may be counted toward this requirement. Exceptions should be approved by the Performance Studies teacher prior to the final recital of the semester.

Junior Recital: Required in Voice Performance and Pedagogy, and Music Technology option. Optional for others.

Senior Performance: Required

Student Recital Policies

  • Student Recitals are held five or six times per semester on Wednesday afternoons at 4:00 p.m.
  • To be included on a Student Recital program, you must complete a Recital Form and turn it in to the Department Office by 4:30 p.m. on the Friday prior to the recital date. Incomplete forms or those submitted past the deadline will not be considered. No exceptions!
  • Recitals do not exceed 40 minutes of music. Total time per performer should not exceed eight minutes; a request for exceptions should be presented by the performance teacher to the faculty at least two weeks prior to the desired date.
  • Recital forms will be considered in the order in which they are received until the maximum time is filled.
  • No more than one form per student, per recital will be accepted unless time permits. Once a student has already performed during a semester, additional performances will be permitted only if time permits.
  • Any request(s) not included on one program will be included automatically on the next recital unless performers withdraw their recital forms.
  • Recital forms must be complete (composer’s full name, complete title; opus number and/or key, if applicable)
  • Recital forms must be checked and signed by the student’s Performance Studies teacher prior to submission.

The Junior Recital

  • A half recital (25 minutes of music) performed in conjunction with at least one other student during the Junior year is required for B.A. Music students in the Voice Performance and Pedagogy, and Music Technology options. The student must register for MU 3010, Junior Recital (0.5 credit) and be registered concurrently in a 3000 level performance studies.
  • At the discretion of the Performance Studies teacher, a student may perform a non-required half recital (25 minutes of music) in conjunction with at least one other student during the Junior year. The student must be enrolled in 3000 level Performance Studies.
  • Permission will be granted for a non-required Junior Recital only to those exceptional students who have demonstrated, in both the quality and quantity of music studies, that they have the ability to present a recital of high caliber in the Junior year in addition to the requirements for the Senior year.
  • A pre-recital jury will be performed for the faculty at least four weeks prior to the scheduled date of the Junior Recital. The faculty will determine if this program is ready to be performed publicly. The student will not be exempt from the regular level jury at the end of the semester in which the Junior recital is presented.
  • At the pre-recital jury, the student will be prepared both to perform the program and to discuss the music with the faculty. At the conclusion of the jury, the faculty will recommend whether the student should perform publicly or privately. The student should provide copies of the printed program, in the format that will be employed, for the faculty to edit and approve prior to printing.

The Senior Recital

Seniors will present a final performance in either the first or second semester at the 4000 level. This final performance will be either a public performance or a jury-in-lieu-of-recital. In both cases, the program should represent music in a variety of styles and periods. Seniors are exempt from the semester jury during the semester of the final performance.

  • The Senior Recital can be a solo performance or one-half of a recital with another student.
  • If the performance is a solo recital, at least 40 minutes but not more than 50 minutes of music should be included. If it is one-half of a program, at least 25 minutes but not more than 30 minutes of music should be included.
  • The student will present a pre-recital jury at least four weeks prior to the scheduled performance. At this jury, the student will be prepared both to perform the program and to discuss the music with the faculty. At the conclusion of the jury, the faculty will recommend whether the student should perform publicly or privately. The student should provide copies of the printed program, in the format that will be employed, for the faculty to edit and approve prior to printing.

Constraints

Because of financial, staffing and other constraints, the Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance can sponsor only those recitals that are required by the degree.

Programs and Taping for Junior and Senior Recitals

  • Program material for Senior and Junior Recital performances should be typed and available in multiple copies for the faculty jury as outlined above. Preparations and final proofing of the program is to be done by the student in consultation with the Performance Studies teacher. The program layout should follow department guidelines. The student is responsible for having the programs and program notes printed.
  • Any student desiring to have his/her recital recorded may arrange with the Technical Director to have a recording made.

The Senior Jury-in-Lieu-of Recital

The Senior jury is performed for the music faculty and should comprise at least 30 minutes of music. The student will perform the entire program and be prepared to discuss the music with the faculty. The student will present one typed copy of the program to each faculty member in attendance.

The Solo Student Recital Application

Procedure

  1. Application forms may be obtained in the Music and Theatre Office.
  2. After consulting with your Performance Studies teacher about possible recital dates, go to SCAC Office and check with Susanne Hastings for a available recital date in the Smith Recital Hall. If you are planning a reception following the recital, check also on the availability of Room 130. Make preliminary reservation of that date, subject to the approval of your Performance Studies teacher.
  3. Check with prospective members of your recital jury and your Performance Studies teacher and schedule a day and time for the jury. The jury must consist of at least three members of the Music Faculty, including your Performance Studies teacher. NOTE: the jury date must be at least four weeks prior to the recital date.
  4. Return to SCAC Office to reserve the Smith Recital Hall for the recital jury.
  5. Obtain the signatures of those faculty members who have agreed to serve on your recital jury.
  6. Obtain the signature of your Performance Studies teacher.
  7. Copies of the completed application are given to: Mrs. Johnson (Music, Theatre, and Dance office), Karen Weldon (SCAC Office), your Performance Studies teacher, each member of your Recital Jury. At this time, the recital date will be placed on the SCAC and Department calendars.

Stipulations

  1. The Recital Jury date must be at least four weeks prior to the recital date.
  2. Other soloists appearing on the recital must participate in the recital jury as well. Ensemble performances must also be ready for the jury.
  3. If the recital is a shared Junior or Senior Recital, each solo performer must fill out an application.
  4. The Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance sponsors only the Junior and Senior Solo Recitals. Music students who wish to perform a solo recital that is not a Junior or Senior Recital accept financial responsibility for the following: payment of accompanists, ushers, stage managers, tuning of the piano, printing and materials for the programs, tapes and sound recording engineer if desired. On-campus solo recitals that are not Junior or Senior Recitals still require the approval of a faculty recital jury, and scheduling at least four weeks prior to the recital date.
  5. Except under extreme circumstances, the recital date may not be changed once it has been published on the Department calendar. In such cases, you are to see that your Performance Studies teacher notifies Melissa Furbish.
